Interoutes at SMM 2024: Charting the Course for the Future of Shipping
Hamburg, Germany 3 - 6 September 2024
From 3 to 6 September 2024, the global maritime community gathered in Hamburg for SMM 2024, the world's leading maritime industry event, and the Interoutes team was there. With over 2,200 exhibitors and approximately 49,000 attendees from across the globe, SMM once again cemented its position as the most important event on the maritime industry calendar. Attending as visitors, we seized the opportunity to explore the latest innovations, connect with the sector's brightest minds, and gain first hand insight into the technologies shaping the future of shipping.
A Global Stage for Maritime Innovation
Themed "Driving the Maritime Transition," SMM 2024 brought together shipowners, suppliers, shipyards, technology providers, and thought leaders to address the most pressing challenges facing the shipping industry today. The fair's agenda centred on three transformative pillars: the decarbonisation of ships, the rise of Artificial Intelligence in maritime operations, and the recruitment of the next generation of maritime talent.
For Interoutes a maritime services company specialising in weather routing, voyage optimisation, and vessel performance evaluation since 2001, this was the ideal event to attend. The fair offered an invaluable opportunity for gathering insights, networking with industry leaders, exploring potential partnerships, and engaging with the conversations shaping the future of shipping.
Greece Takes Centre Stage
One of the standout stories of SMM 2024 was the growing Greek presence. Greece, the world's foremost shipowning nation, doubled its participation compared to prior editions, with the Greek national pavilion expanding to nearly 800 square metres. Thirty five organisations showcased their products and services under the Hellenic banner, reinforcing Greece's vital role in the global maritime ecosystem.
As a Greek company rooted in Piraeus, the beating heart of international shipping, Interoutes was proud to walk the halls of SMM alongside fellow Hellenic maritime professionals. Our visit to SMM 2024 reflected not only the strength of the Greek maritime sector but also our own commitment to staying at the forefront of routing and performance services for the global fleet.
Navigating the Maritime Energy Transition
The drive toward decarbonisation was a dominant theme across the exhibition halls. With the International Maritime Organization's target of carbon neutrality by 2050, the industry is racing to develop and adopt alternative fuels, from green hydrogen and methanol to ammonia, while building the infrastructure to support them. SMM 2024 even dedicated an entire exhibition area in Hall A2, the Future Fuel Area, to companies pioneering clean fuel technologies.
At Interoutes, we see the energy transition not as a distant goal but as an everyday operational reality. Our weather routing and voyage optimisation services are designed to minimise fuel consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions on every voyage. By combining cutting edge digital ship modelling with the deep seafaring expertise of our team of master mariners and experienced captains, we help shipowners and operators achieve measurable efficiency gains voyage after voyage.
With the introduction of the CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator) index, optimised voyage planning has become more critical than ever, and Interoutes' solutions are purpose built to help clients meet these regulatory demands while maintaining commercial competitiveness.
The Human Element in the Age of AI
For the first time, SMM 2024 featured a dedicated AI CENTER in Hall B6, spotlighting artificial intelligence applications for the maritime industry. From predictive maintenance to autonomous navigation, the potential of AI in shipping is vast and rapidly evolving.
At Interoutes, we firmly believe that technology and the human element must work hand in hand. Our approach has always combined advanced meteorological data and digital tools with the irreplaceable judgement and experience of seasoned mariners. Our team of Greek captains and maritime experts, available around the clock, provides the kind of human to human guidance that no algorithm can fully replace, especially when navigating severe weather systems, complex routing decisions, and the real world unpredictability of the open sea.
This philosophy was further validated in 2025 when Interoutes partnered with NAPA, a leading provider of maritime software and digital services, to launch the Expert Route Monitoring service. This joint offering merges NAPA's digital voyage optimisation platform with Interoutes' expert human consultancy, delivering a best of both worlds solution to captains and operators worldwide.
Walking the exhibition halls and seeing the industry's digital transformation unfold in real time reaffirmed the direction we have been taking with IRS Nautilus, our proprietary platform launched in 2022. IRS Nautilus serves as the digital backbone of our service offering, providing clients with a clean, intuitive interface for accessing real time voyage monitoring, performance evaluation reports, and routing recommendations all in one place.
The platform embodies our commitment to innovation without losing sight of what matters most: clear, actionable information delivered by people who understand the sea.
Looking Ahead our visit to SMM 2024 reinforced what we have always known: the maritime industry's greatest strength lies in collaboration. Whether it is developing greener shipping solutions, harnessing the power of data and AI, or simply ensuring that a vessel reaches its destination safely and on schedule, progress is made when the right people come together.
The Interoutes team returned to Piraeus from Hamburg energised and inspired, with fresh ideas, new contacts, and a renewed determination to continue delivering quality services designed for mariners, by mariners.
